Building a FreakOut: Parking Lot Games

Having FreakOut 40 in the White Mountains has inspired us to look into past FreakOuts. We are fortunate to have John Hilferty as one of our chapter members. He’s been very helpful sharing information and has photos and memorabilia from 1983 to 2002! As I looked through the photos, the first thing I noted was, if you have the cars and like-minded people, you don’t need much more, to have fun. Except maybe a bag for your head, some tires filled with rocks, a watermelon…

I’m told by John the photos below are from Bryner Raudibaugh’s famous “Lawn-Kahana” games. The games were a relay race where participants stopped at a station, completed a task and continued on to the next, the race ending when you broke through the TP ribbon.

Spectators against Spider L to R: Ed West (w/white shirt), Bob Danielak, Kris? (Bob’s girlfriend), Rich Danielak. Sitting at TP finish line: (L) Nan Myers, (R) Lynn Schindel. Competitor with bag: Jay Welsh. Far left with FFO shirt and pink hat: Chris? Adelman. With white shorts: Bobb Raynor.

Not sure what they are up to but I like the line of cars.
I added this photo because the shorts made me smile. Drinking is James Schindel
Bryner Raudibaugh, this task was to put valves into an 850 head.
Bob Danielak attempting to slalom a tire filled with rocks around cones.
John Hilferty Jr. making wine as he runs along pulling a tub filled with grapes.
Bryner looking on as Scott Hill, former club President and Tim Schindel complete the Ignazio… task. You’ll have to ask John about that. He will be at FreakOut!

Inspired by the famous “Lawn-Kahana”, where parking lot games consisted of Headlight ring toss (If I can find some headlight rings, we may add this one in.) and building up the head of an 850, we’ve added a few games to FreakOut 40 parking lot activities.

Cornhole, Toss Across and RC Autocross. Kathy Custeau is ready to go with the Toss Across. Luis and I are making Fiat inspired Cornhole boards. And we may, be going a little stir crazy with Little Red locked in the garage but yes, RC Autocross!!!

Luis is learning the ins and outs of his new 3D printer. He found an X1/9 CAD model on line and tweaked it for our needs. He also has a 124 Spider in the works.

He also made a vacuum forming table. Anyone interested in 3D printing and vacuum forming find him at FreakOut. There’s a bit of a learning curve but interesting. I’m thinking about plastic parts you can’t find any more… Very Interesting.

We bought a couple of RC cars… Luis found a Lancia UDI RC 1603 and beetle UDI RC 1608, 1/18 Scale, at AMain Hobbies for $89.  The UDI cars are also sold under other names and models with the same chassis. We have seen a bunch online.

The X1/9 is running on a 1/16 scale Letrax Rally (sells for $129). It has the same wheel base at the UDI but is narrower so it fits the X/19 body better.

This is my 595, it has the UDI RC 1603 chassis and Cen Racing Fiat Abarth 595 body. Luis 3D printed supports to hold the body to the chassis. I cut the hole for the aftermarket sunroof. If you’re interested in this setup Luis can 3D print the supports for you.
We have a track system and we’ve printed a bunch of cones.

You’re welcome to give one of our cars a run BUT!

Is anyone up for a little competition?

We were thinking maybe between Chapters.

Fastest Time! Best paint job! Best Graphics!… Any Suggestions? Drifting maybe?
