Building A Freakout: Club Motorsports

It’s official any weekend is great when you bring together Fiats and friends. Meet the crew for FreakOut 2023.

Starting on the left and going around the table. Danny O’donnell, Roseanne Scyz, Mark and Sue Rowan, Debbie and Rusty Harris, Tim Beeble, Rose and Dave Laborde, Judy Hebert, John Hilferty, Jim and Kathy Custeau, Kevin Rich, Luis Colom

As I mentioned in the previous blog, we met last weekend so our extended Fiat family could get a sneak peek of what we’re planning for FreakOut 2023.

Despite the rain we did get some parade laps in at Club Motorsports. I drove little red and it was exhilarating! Yes, I’m still smiling. I don’t race but I’ve been on tracks before for parade laps. The corners paired with the elevation changes on this track are fantastic. At the end everyone wanted to sign up for the hot laps including me!

Things to know about the track:

Club Motorsports is a relatively new facility with the latest safety personnel in place.

The track is a 2.5-mile, European style road course with 15 turns and a 250’ elevation change. With a 750’ elevation change per lap.

The track is well marked and has a nice surface with no standing water. It’s 40’ wide and 80’ on the corners with good runoff areas.

Track sound requirement is 92 decibels at 50 feet from the course during driving sessions.

Parade laps: No Roll cage or helmet required in hard or convertible top cars.

Hot laps: Everyone is required to wear a Snell SA2015 Helmet. Helmets are available for rent at the track if you don’t have one.

Broomstick test: If you have a soft top and do not have a roll cage, you need to pass the broomstick test. Sitting in your car with your helmet on you need to have one inch of free space below the broomstick. The broomstick should be resting on the windshield and the support behind your seat.

“Imagine Judy, Jim and Tim are wearing their Helmets.”

Yes! Judy and Jim, with their helmets on will be ready to heat up the track in an open top 124 Spider at FreakOut! Fortunately for Jim he just bought a 2019 Abarth and his first words after taking it around the track on Sunday were, “Sign me up!”

No! Tim will not be heating up the track in an open top 124 Spider without a roll cage at FreakOut. Tim will need a roll cage or a hard top.

Grab your helmet a broomstick and a friend to see if you and your open top car qualify for the track.

FreakOut attendees not participating in hot laps are welcome to stay at no charge. I recommend the mile long access road with many places to stop and watch the cars, some with picnic tables and porta potty. You’ll want to follow the road to the top for a picturesque view of Mount Chocorua, the Presidential Range and the track.

A food Truck will be available for lunch at the facility for those who plan to stay the day. There is also, McDonalds, Subway, Aroma Joes and Yankee Smokehouse 2.4 miles from Club Motorsports.

Please see clubmotorsports.com for additional information about track requirements. You can also email Pat Curran, Director Club Experience at patc@clubmotorsports.com

  1. Curious if the bodywork of an X1/9 surrounding its rear window constitutes a roll bar for hot laps purposes? How about with its fiberglass top in place?
